Why are recruiting costs in Japan different from other markets such as the U.S. or APAC? »Top

Recruiting fees, as well as compensation packages, are higher in Japan than other global regions such as APAC, EMEA or the U.S. There are two basic reasons for this fact:

1. The cost of living and doing business in Tokyo is much higher than in other parts of the world.

2. Local cultural issues related to job change.

(Recruiting Costs in Detail)

Costs: Japan is generally a high cost place to do business in general. Even ten years after the post bubble era, Japan remains one of most expensive cities in the world today. In fact Tokyo was the most expensive city in the world for 2005*.

Cultural Issues: Japan has been called a "unique" society. This Uniqueness refers both to lifestyle and the way people conduct business on a daily basis. In Japan loyalty to one's company, including management and co-workers, is still considered to be very important. So in general, Japanese professionals are very reserved when it comes to career change, compared to other countries. In the west, as well as parts of Asia, it is possible to place a classified ad in major periodicals or on the web and expect a reasonably large response from which potentially suitable candidates may be selected. This technique has limited usefulness in the Japan market. In terms of contacting potential candidates directly by phone or email, the success rate in terms of setting up an initial interview would be generally less than 10%.

Summary: The high costs of doing business in general coupled with hesitance to change jobs leads to a smaller pool of potential candidates, increased search time and higher recruitment costs in the Japan market.

Wouldn't it be best to use a global firm for senior level candidate searches?»Top

It depends. International recruitment firms often have good connections to high-level management in a cross section of industries, sometimes on a global basis. On the other hand the breadth of what these firms attempt to encompass is often unreasonably broad. It is very difficult for any recruitment firm, large or small, to be an expert in every single field. On a global basis, it is virtually impossible. Locally based firms often have industry specific focus and ground level knowledge that allows them to offer deeper and more effective searches within any give market segment. At ProtoSell, we Focus on telecom and networking. Within our field, this focus allows us to offer more effective searches than most of the major international firms operating in Japan today. As Japan is a highly conservative culture, trust and dependability are also of primary concern to most professionals. ProtoSell's understanding of Japan's cultural environment and our relations with key industry players, gives us the credibility needed to work with and introduce the best candidates in our field.
