If you want your business to be successful in Asia, make sure to follow these golden rules.

.

1. How deeply do your managers know the local scene?

Make sure everyone in a management role deeply understands local market conditions as well as nuances of the specific country’s business culture and is not afraid to tell you why your current plan will not work in a given region.

2. Forget global strategy go “glocal”

While having a global strategy may sound impressive, applying a one size fits all strategy to different markets with differing conditions generally results in quick failure. It is better to take a “glocal” approach that can combine the merits of your global strategic plan with regional specific realities and the practical on the ground knowledge of your local team.

3. Do you trust me?

Trust the people you put in place in your regional offices and give them the freedom to do what is necessary to succeed. If you don’t trust them to make the right decisions, don’t hire them.

4. Get closer

While it is commonly accepted that it’s important to stay close to your customers, in Asia it is often necessary to get even closer than you would in most parts of the West. For example in Japan “nommunication” , or drinking with customers, can be extremely valuable in terms of understanding your client’s point of view and also increase the likelihood of getting the real story as to what makes them happy or unhappy about working with your company.

5. Quality is in the eye of the beholder.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder. Customers quality expectations vary greatly across the world in Asia. What may be fine in China is certain death in Japan. Make sure your quality matches the specific market you are targeting.
